- The Dickin Medal – The Dickin Medal was founded by Maria Dickin to honor animals who served Britain valiantly during World War II. A more recent recipient is Appollo – a search and rescue dog for the New York Police Department – who, along with his handler Peter Davis were on site of the 9/11 attacks 15 minutes after the towers fell – making Appollo the first search and rescue animal on site. Appollo received the Dickin Medal along with Roselle and Salty (two service dogs who led their owners out of the damaged buildings) on behalf of all dogs who participated in the search and rescue operations around the September 11, 2001 attacks of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
